The 1.6L engine has a Mass Airflow Sensor that is designed to work with the stock intake. Most of the aftermarket intakes have larger diameter tubing. A lot of people who put these intakes on, actually lose performance in the car since the MAF sensor does not understand the extra air being pulled through. Therefore the computer does not know how to adjust fuel and air mixtures correctly. But I did see that people were replacing their MAFs with a Bosch unit designed for the 2000 and up Toyota Celica GTS. This unit can "read" higher airflow signals than the Mazda one and will fit directly into the tubing with no modifications. Before you buy one, research that the unit will work for your car. There isan intakebeing offered for $100 - $150 for the 1.6L engine, but I forgot the company's name. Hope this helps.
