THIS YEAR AND MODEL IS TIMING CHAIN AND WILL NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT UNLESS THERE IS AN INTERNAL PROBLEM OR NOISE AT TIMING COVER.

Hi everyone

I am about to purchase a Mazda MPV 1999 and want to know if they would have timing belts or chains. Its just the guy
at the car yard was telling me it was a timing belt yesterday and then told me today it was a chain. Im a bit confused! Are all
1999 model MPVs chains or belts? Your help would be appreciated.

You're a bit confused!! So is your salesman. Mazda did not a build any MPV's for the 99 model year!! 1998 was the last model year for the original rear or 4wd MPV with a 3.0l timing belt driven engine. 2000 saw the all new MPV that was front wheel drive only and had a 2.5l v6 timing chain driven engine. So 98 and older is a timing belt. 2000 and newer timing chain.

No im not confused, neither is the salesperson! Rego and manufacturer papers show that this MPV was built in 1999. In New Zealand there are many 1999 model MPV vehicles on sale. The 1999 model looks exactly the same as the 2000 model in appearance.

Sorry sinista, keep forgetting to check where people are posting from. 99 MPV was not available in the US. How about sending me a ticket to New Zealand so I can see for myself. Two weeks ought to do it :D. If it is front wheel drive then it still should be chain engine and rear or 4wd would be belt.

Also it could of been built in the second half of 98 to qualify to be a 99

don't buy mpv. i just don't think it's that much of good van. i have a 95 and only 80,000 miles so.. i mean it's still running but i knew many had them and story wasn't too good. [&:]
