85 RX7, the boot for the shifter is pushed down, most of the older cars I've looked at has the same problem. All the tiny little tits that hold the rubber boot on are broken. Any good repairs for this common problem?

Found the same problem when I took it apart to rip my wiring harness out. I have not looked at it very carefully yet, but I am going to fabricate a ring out of aluminum with all the appropriate holes and mount it to that..........somehow. Once again, I will look at it and let you know if I come up with an alternate (better than factory) way of securing it.
