Front struts are shot on my '06 Mazda 3, is this a do it yourself type of project, or should I just go to a shop?

I did it myself....hardest part is getting the strut out of the lower control arm, but overall a pretty easy fix.

You'll need a spring compressor that can fit along the outsides of the coils and sit fairly low profile....one for each side of the spring so it doesn't bow.

Did you get struts that were made for worn suspensions (like I've seen online)?
Did you have to get an alignment afterwards?
Is the main safety concern with the spring tension? (someone mentioned this to me)
Anything else I should know?
Where did you get your replacement struts/what brand?

I had to do it when I installed my Eibach springs. The main concern is a loaded spring launching off of the strut. If you use a good compressor and make sure you don't get your body inline with the spring should it release, you should be just fine. I did have to do an alignment, but it was because of the drop, not because of strut replacement.

I changed both struts myself in my 05 Mazda 3. I saved a whole bunch of money on the mechanic and bought both front complete struts at a local store for under $200 both. If anyone's interested they have a website qeautoparts.com. Try it out guys and you'll get a good deal, like I did. Good luck.

I have a 2000 MPV-es that I think the struts are gone. Does anyone know if the struts are inside the housing that bolts onto the wheel? I live in the Philippines and the automotive knowledge here sucks. They love to grip and rip here. I can't find a part number except the Tokico number on the strut housing. I think maybe the strut part number is on the strut cylinder and that's inside. It may have to be taken off to see anything. What an experince that will be here. Thanks please help.
