Cold Idle Speed
Hello, first post new member. I purchased a 2006 mazda 3 touring i with 2.0 auto two weeks ago. Just wondering when you first start car on chilly mornings is it normal for idle to be up to 1800-2000 rpms? Will drop down when I put it in gear. Live in Connecticut and temps been 45-50 degrees in the morn.

Welcome to the forum, why dont you tell us a little something about yourself, in the "New member area". This happens to me also on cold mornings but i have improperly placed intake cone, and eventually idels down to 1000rpms then ~850 cuz of my cone, so i guess its normal, but only if it returns to 1000 any lower than that then you have a problem.

Yeah i did it myself, i can fix it but im kinda lazy, its been there for a while no problems except the check engine light comes on and it makes a knocking noise when accelerating up 4500 rpms...heres a pic, try not to laugh to hard

heh heh, the classic intake ( i remember first seeing that picture). but it's one hell of a good idea!
as for the cold morning high rpms... that's normal. the car is trying to warm the engine up quickly, hence the reason why the rpms are higher when you first start your vehicle. once the car is warmed up to the proper temperature, the rpms will be lower. this is normal engine functioning for all vehicles

pretty sure that is what it is called. basically what it does, to explain it in mechanic terms, is a device used in an internal-combustion engine to enrich the fuel mixture by reducing the flow of air to the carburetor. thus running it at higher rpms.
