I'm changing the brake rotors on an old 323 ('84), and the brake rotors seem to be stuck as he**! The haynes manual says I should use a "suitable puller" to pull it off. I've removed the big nut on the center "axle" (don't know what this is called in english). If I try a conventional puller , the "axle" just disappears into the center of the brake rotor, leaving the brake rotor in the same place. A bit hard for me to explain, hope you understand. What is a "suitable puller" in this situation? I tried tapping the rotor with a hammer, but it wouldn't budge. Am I missing something?

i dont think that thsoe rotors are affixed onto the car, i thought that they were slide on, but it has been a while since ive dealt with one..are you SURE that they arent galded on by rust?

84 or 94? I thought they were still called GLC back then. Will check in the morning with workshop manual. Have not worked on one that old for quite some time but I am pretty sure you need to remove the entire hub assembly and press the hub and knuckle apart in order to unbolt the rotor from the hub. If that is the case then no 'suitable puller' I know of will be adequate as they take several tons of press force to come apart. By the way the nut is called an 'axle stake nut' and you should consider using a new one when putting things back together as they should be a one time use part.

Thanks for the replies. The mazda is '84, no doubt about it. 1.3l 323. The haynes manual describes the process, it doesn't look like it should be any problems in the book (allthough it's NOT a workshop manual) In reply to Patrick, YES it might be rust, but I thought it would be better asking for advice in here before breaking something with a sledge hammer. If you (babyhuey) could look it up in the workshop manual and let me know if you find something, it would be greatly appreciated!

We still called it a GLC here in US and we have never had a 1.3l engine. This is picture of 84 front rotor on a GLC. If this looks like your front brake set up then the knuckle and hub has to be removed and pressed apart in order to unbolt the rotor from the hub.

Thanks a lot babyhuey! Great response! Though, I just came home from my first trip testing my new brakes :D. I found out myself what you stated. It was a bitch getting off though, hope I haven't destroyed the bearings. I have 30 kms on the new brakes now, tried to seat them in properly.
