Hi, I just found this site but could not find a previous thread that was like my problem. So here it is:
When I turn the steering wheel, the power steering works, but feels jerky or rough while turning the wheel. It feels like "hydraulic rough" as oposed to "mechanical rough" or "grinding rough" if that makes any sense. After the car warms up it seems to get smooth or normal.
The Facts:
2000 Millenia "p" (2.5 L). Original owner, 60k miles. No mechanical problems other than the power tilt wheel motor failing.
PS fluid level is orignial and full. no leaks, never has needed fluid to be added. Belt seems fine. Although, I noticed it had a little more deflection than the main belt. Definitely not slipping or squeeling. PS pump is turning fine. no noises. Visual inspection of Rack & pinion assembly & tie rods look fine and are solid, no play at ball joints and fastening points.
I'm ready to take it into the shop, but I live in the countryside and I'm 60 plus miles to a Mazda dealership or Mazda mechanic. I'd like to approach this with as much information as possible, even if I do end up needing to take it to a shop.
