Default 1987 323 A good buy?

Hey guys, I'm looking for a car to have a little fun with, that gets good mileage. My ideal car would be a CRX but they're hard to find in my are, and really hard to get with clean titles. I found a local 323 I'm looking at purchasing for $900, I'm wondering if this is a good buy.
Things that are pretty important to me
Good Mileage, got this covered.
Something small and fun to drive, this is a bit subjective naturally, so don't worry too much about that.
Something easy to work on yourself, cheap to maintain.
Easy to find replacement parts? A good community to ask questions (hopefully this forum)
Something fairly durable, this car may see a little time on non paved roads, nothing crazy off-roading, but I'd like the suspension to be able to handle a little play.
Is there any room to upgrade this vehicle? Motor swaps/ quick mods to gain some power, or even large overhaul projects on the motor?

From what I can tell it is the 1.6L non turbo, FF layout model. I don't know if it is the 8valve or 16valve motor, could someone help me out with that?
The car is very straight and clean, looks like no accidents, hardly even any dings or dents.

Interior is nice, not perfect, the fuel gauge doesn't work, but I'll work on fixing that. Also there is no tach on a 5pd manual, leads me to believe its the 8valve motor. That's also something I'd have to install.

Is the 1987 323 the car for me?
Also a link to any 323 dedicated sites would be great, or sites you can buy performance parts / guides to installing parts would be great if there are any.

Thanks a lot any advice/opinion/info/links appreciated, also sorry moderators if this is the wrong section for this type of thread.

Nope, this is not the car to drive on non-paved roads.

I don't mean driving it off road daily or anything close to that, there's just a small dirt track, probably less than a half mile, with nothing serious about it, that my friends and I like to dick around on. Just as long as the suspension isn't a known issue for breaking and being unreliable, it should have no problem.
