Android Auto Issues

Android Auto Issues
I just picked up a 2019 CX5 last night, and I'm already running into issues with android auto.
Firstly, the car's touchscreen is disabled in android auto, even when the car is stopped and in park. I can scroll through the pressable buttons with the jog ****, but nada on the touchscreen. The touchscreen works fine for factory radio/navigation. Reddit is telling me that this is intentional (?!) because mazda couldn't figure out how to only lock out the touchscreen when the car is moving. That can't be correct, can it? I mean thinking about it logically for five seconds, you're far more distracted trying to awkwardly scroll through a touch interface with a **** then just pressing the button on the screen. If mazda intentionally disabled the touchscreen, they've made AA exponentially less safe.
Secondly, when in android auto, the only option I can select is navigation. The music and phone icons are on the display, but they're grayed out. I have several android auto compatible music apps installed (they all show up in the app on my phone when not connected to the car), and obviously the phone part should work, but neither is a selectable option. I did allow all permissions that popped up (I think there were 7 of them?) when initially configuring AA. Like I said, since all the AA apps show up on the phone itself when not connected to the car, so I suspect this is something weird on mazda's end. My phone is running android pie and AA is fully up to date.
Android auto was a fairly big consideration for me when I was car shopping. I'm not going to be happy if mazda's implementation is as broken as it appears to be. Any suggestions on how to resolve these issues?
