whoops!
In case anyone else didn't realise it coz they were in too much of a rush to read the instructions properly (guilty!), this only works when you have 'ERR' on the display.
I tried it with my display showing 'CODE'. So I inputed the code 3 times to get the 'ERR' on the display then tried it again and voila it worked!
I have a 2002 Mazda 323 SP20 and I'm from Australia.
Hope this helps someone else who in their haste didn't notice the minor but important detail.
And thanx to Blue_SP20!

Mazda radio code wanted!
My radio is showing CODE flashing, but I bought the vehicle second hand & can't trace the previous owner. The book says you can set your own code as long as you know the present one, so I guess I need a master code for this radio. Can anyone help pleas? The radio is made by Matsu****a Communciation Industrial Co Ltd of Yokohama, Japan. The model No is CB01-66-9CO, the ref number is CQ-LM0920A, and the serial number is 17602. I've tried 4989 but to no avail!

Mazda radio code
Cannot even get my radio to say ERR, just keeps saying CODE no matter how many times I enter a number. Vehicle is an old Premacy, 2000. About to give up, take it in to the dealer!

I'm located in Germany and have a 2004 Mazda6 Diesel Kombi (Wagon). I had this same frustrating issue after disconnecting my battery to replace a headlight. I followed the instructions and kept it in ACC and tried about five times before giving up. I eventually turned the car on and left the house and tried it again while waiting at a red light (although really debating whether it was time to go aftermarket). Sure enough, 4989 as the code worked just fine and my radio turned on. So for those that haven't had luck, try it while the car is running!
