is there a way to completely eliminate the pinging sound, i'm already running 89 octane and the pinging still exists, just not as often of an occurrence.

Just be careful mixing gas.. I have heard of problems with noises in the engine etc..

And since we are on the subject of gas.. be careful with Shell gas! Known to have water etc in it...!

I don't know of a way to completely eliminate pinging. I know in most every GM owners manual it says "some pinging is normal, only heavy knocking noise means a problem". I paraphrased it there. Your car is completely computer controlled and i doubt there is any adjustment that can be made. Example: Rotate distributor to retard timing a few degrees. You can try to step up and try to run super for a few tanks and see what happens. I have had no problems with shell gas here, it is mainly up to the station owner to keep their underground tanks dry and clean, not the refiners.

Maybe adding 87 Octane with a bottle of complete "clean fuel system" would work, I did it with my Mazda 1990 MX-6 and it worked.

Tried it out.
