Oil Additive

RE: Oil Additive
I use a pint of Marvel Mystery oil and a pint of STP at every oil change along with a new filter. My engines seem to last a lot longer than friends and family that don't use it. Of course that could be because I generally take better care of my vehicles. I recently sold an '88 Sable that had 164,000 miles on it. The guy that bought it was amazed at how well it started and ran, and it doesn't burn any oil between changes.

RE: Oil Additive
Oil additives such as STP have been widely reported as doing nothing but thickening the oil, raising the effective viscosity numbers (ie. turning 5w20 or 5w30 into 10w30). This can be good for pre-1995 engines, especially worn pre-1995 engines.
But for today's engines, which need oil to be thin to allow proper lubrication of the tighter tolerances, this can be a negative.

What I know about Marvel Mystery oil isit was formulated pre WW2 (as in more than 60 years ago), and accordng to what I have heard, no changes have been made to the recipe. Engines of course have changed a lot since, making me skeptical of its applicability to 21st autos. I believe it is most used in marine engines, especially diesel engines, since I am not a boat person, I don't know more about why.
