oil consumption at 300,000 miles
Hello, Looking for suggestions to reduce oil consumption on my 2002 Protege with almost 300,000 miles. I currently run Mobil One 10W 30.
I cannot see oil burn at the tail pipe. Do addtives work?
This is a 2.0L with 5 speed manual.

Trevor: there are not many who have experience with a 300,000 mile engine.
Additives work to a degree, but they don't fix the problem.
You may loose oil past the rings, past the valve guide seals and through the PCV system.
Replace the PCV valve.
Try "RESTORE" with your next oil change.
Give it the "scottykilmer lacquer thinner treatment" (Youtube) or the Seafoam treatment in the hope to make sticky rings unstuck.
Or switch to cheaper oil and keep topping off.

Thanks!
Well new is not an option. One or two quarts in between changes I can deal with. It has been Seafoamed and new PCV valve done.
Has anyone used Restore? I have looked at it but never tried it.
Is 300,000 miles unheard of? I will shoot for 400,000 now with no major engine work!
Thanks everyone!

Trevor: Yours has 300K miles, so I heard of it. There is a Chevrolet S10 which made it to a 1 million without a rebuild of the engine:
Man on verge of putting millionth mile on his 1991 Chevrolet
The Detroit News
MEDFORD, Wis. -- Frank Oresnik is on the verge of making history driving his old standby -- the pickup truck he says is about to pass the 1 million mile mark.
Oresnik took the 1991 Chevrolet Silverado to the Oil Ex-Change Quick
Lube in Medford on Thursday for what he expects will be its last oil change and tuneup before hitting the magic number.
He said the truck is 1,200 miles from a million, and once he hits the mark he will retire the vehicle.
"I feel almost like the longtime NFL player as he goes into his last training camp knowing this is the end," Oresnik said.
He credits proper maintenance and a good measure of luck for allowing the truck to rack up so many miles. He said he's had more than 300 oil changes and tuneups at the Medford business, going in every 3,000 miles.
The truck has had four radiators, three gas tanks, five transmissions and six water pumps, but the engine has never been overhauled, Oresnik said.
I am using RESTORE. I cannot tell if it reduces oil consumption because I don't drive the protege regularly. It reduced vibration and made it run quieter. So i believe it does even out the compression across the cylinders by filling in scratches in the moving parts.
There are "High Mileage Oils" that contain conditioners for the rubber seals in the engine. They make the rubber swell and thus seal better. However, once you used this kind of oil you have to stick with it because a standard oil will wash out the conditioners and make the seals leak worse than before.

still going
I am on my 3rd water pump and I had to replace the compressor for my a/c but the original engine without an overhaul is still working fine. I went 270,000 miles on the original clutch and went 330,000 miles before I replaced my struts. Like I said, except for having to add a little bit of oil between oil changes, my 97 Protege is still running fine and the paint has not faded at all-it still looks fantastic.

If you want to keep the car, change the engine by a lower mileage one
