Seatbelt won't release

Seatbelt won't release
Any help or suggestions are greatly appeciated. It's a 99 Miata with only 22K miles. Yesterday the driver seatbelt locked on a bump and hasn't released. When I unbuckled, it retracted, but it can no longer be extracted, so it is unuseable at this time.

back to the dealer seatbelt are safety items and not many know they are covered warrantied for life
if the dealer wont replace stop in at your local dmv or mto and find out more
had the rear seat belt on my 99 caravan replaced by the dealer no charge and i bought the van used at another lot
the mechanic told me when he checked it about this little bit of info

Seat belts may be covered by Dodge for lifetime but not by Mazda. There are only a very few cars, mostly early 90's 323/Mx3 that have lifetime warranty coverage and that is only for the passive restraint rail and motors.
Standard safety warranty for Mazda is 5 years or 60,000 miles. Your 99 will probably be out of this range on time depending upon the inservice date. It will be up to the dealer and regional DCSM to offer a goodwill warranty replacement. Given the low mileage and being a Miata it would not be unheard of to get this goodwill warranty but you will need to ask them for this coverage.

RE: Seatbelt won't release
My wife called the dealership today and was told the warranty is expired. They won't do anything about the seatbelt other than to tell me I need a new one and that the labor is $92.00 an hour! Fortunetly they say it should only take an hour.
I tried to dismantel the all the plastic covering the seatbelt retractor. So far I haven't had much luck.

thats to bad that they cant cover it
not sure but is there a button release on those or do they work on an angle setting to lock
the belts in my mazda locked up but it was because the bottom bolt let go and the assembly shifted off the vertical positsion

RE: Seatbelt won't release
Well, just a couple of interestings things. I took it to a dealer who charged me $45.00 to inspect and claimed it must be replaced for $325.00. I complained because of the low mileage and they decided to not charge me for the inspection.
I went home, unbolted the belt from the bottom anchor, let it retract and it loosed up and has worked perfect ever since.
So much for the necessity to replace the belt.
Thanks to evetyone for their input.
