Default 1998 626 won't start. Immobiliser ???

Hi there, hope someone can help. I'm helping a friend in the UK who has been given a 1998 2 litre 4 cylinder mazda 626 GLXi Auto. The problem is that it's been stood for two years and when it was tried to be brought back to life last week it was mistakenly connected to a 24v battery charger, which may or may not have caused some damage.

The original key can't be found, but the genuine mazda spare key (which also has a chip in it) is here. The problem is that it wont fire up, it just cranks, I've done a few tests.
The cambelt is intact.
There ISN'T a spark,
There ISN'T any fuel wetting the plugs.
There IS a running fuel pump getting fuel to the rail IF I manually close the MAIN green relay.
The interior lights on the car weren't working, the 10A fuse had blown, and instantly blows when replaced.
The 10A "engine" fuse blows when the ignition is turned on. Neither of these fuses blow if I unplug the LUCAS energising coil unit, that picks up the chip in the key.
So I've got a short circuit somewhere, but anyone got any ideas what to do next?
If I unplug all of the plugs to the key barrel then it still blows, and if I unplug the ECU then it still blows. The only thing to protect the fuses is to leave the key energiser coil unplugged....So how can I find my short? where could the interior lights and the immobiliser coil have a common link?
Any ideas apprieciated.
