I think one of our other members (Mazmart Trini) will back me up when I say that the tranny (auto?) in these cars is junk. I am not an expert on these but have heard and read posts about this tranny and it does not sound good.

Sheldon!!!? Paging Sheldon for confirmation!!!?

From the Wikipedia article on the 626:
"Though the manual transmission was highly regarded, 4-cylinder 626s from 1994 onwards used Ford's CD4E automatic transmission, which quickly became known for its extremely high failure rate. All 626 automatic transmissions, meanwhile, continued the previous generation 626's habits of ill-timed shifts and indecisive kickdowns"
The 626 I used to have had an automatic transmission that drove me nuts. It would do a kickdown when accelerating to get in a freeway. Of if you pressed too hard on the pedal it would kick down and rev up. There was also the occasional flashing Hold light, but that seemed to come and go or go away if the gear selector was wiggled.
I finally got rid of it when the HLA's got as loud as a typewriter. The dealership said the camshaft was scored and nothing short of a complete engine overhaul would fix it.
Anyway, sometimes it's not a good idea buying a used car from a friend, better to make such purchases from strangers. Does sound like the AT is gone.

Sorry for the rate reply Rich (don't know how I missed this). Yes sir, the CD4E trans in those cars are notorious for taking a crap [:'(]. Walk away while you can...

RE: 2001 626 tranny problem. but, good offer?
Hey whats up? I've got a related concern. Both my parents have mazda 626s (a '93 V6 auto n a '01 I4 auto). Both have transmission problems. I'm currently working on my dads 01, the front seal has let go, and I'm in the process of disassymbling the components on and around the trans. But, I've run into a complication. I'm having trouble gettin the starter off. Any suggestions? I'm also curious to find out as much as I can about these cars that could help along as much as possible. Anywho, I look forward to hear back from you guys.

I assume you have alloy wheels?
If so, striking a hammer against the tire should jar it free. But before reinstalling that, or any other wheel, clean off both surfaces, a wire brush works well for this, use a very small amount of Anti-Seize painted in the back of the wheel mating surface. No more problems after that.
