Default 323 gtx need new turbo

hey i just picked up a 88 gtx and need help, the car is very clean, i bought the car from a guy that said he rebuilt the motor and head and turbo....
driving it home the car felt very undered powered and would back fire...later i checked and i was loosing pressure coming from the manifold to the turbo because there was no gasket from the turbo to the maifold...the guy said he rebuilt a VJ5 turbo....is that the stock turbo for this car? can i just get a turbo from a first gen probe , i think they have the VJ11 turbo..i just dont know what parts are interchangeable..also motor wise..if i happen to mess up the motor..is there swaps for this car..like the 1.8 gtr motor..or could i use a motor from a mecury capri xr2..any advise will help..thank you.

I know this sounds weard but i have heard of turbos installed backwards where the exhaust mani on the turbo is where the intake should be. the turbo is basicly just turned around. what happens is you will start to feel the boost and then it just lets off because its spoolin the wrong direction. your computer will pick up on it to witch contributes to the loss of power.

The Capri XR2 motor will swap right in, just grab the Capri ECU too. VJ14 is the stock turbo for the car. I ran a VJ/11 Hybrid in my Capri. Spools earlier in the RPM range and pulls hard all the way and holds boost better because of the VJ11 side.

If you have any other questions let me know. Also visit www.teamcapri.com for a lot of info from Capri members there. I'm pmpsht on that forum.

Yup. Word.. You have a VJ-14. Some guys run the hybrid (VJ-14 hot side mated to the VJ-11 cold side). They bolt right up together. So, depending on what's wrong with yours and what you find in a junkyard (if you're into saving money) you might be able to get the right parts to fix your set-up. The Capri XR-2 is baically the same set-up. I would grab the ECU only to have a back-up since they are getting harder to find and they are expensive. Don't let it go to waste.
