323, RPM Gauge

RE: 323, RPM Gauge
WOW!!!! Thanks that is such a weight off my chest. I was so worried about having to splice and all that crap.
Cool I will see if I can find a local juck yard that might have one.

That's also how I did my 87 323 which was a DX. It had no tach from the factory. I bought a 323 of the same vintage which was an LX from the San Antonio PD auction for $25 and swapped the cluster that had the tach along with other goodies. The harness is already wired to work on either cluster.

RE: 323, RPM Gauge
Ok so all I need to do is get one that has an RPM gauge and its just a matter of taking the old one off and just finding the hook up and connectors and hooking them up?
I have tried to take off my dash to see how hard this would be if I could ever do it. Do I need to take off my stearing wheel to do this? Because when I tried to take a part my dash it looked like I would need to do this. But of course I really didn't try that hard because I was afraid of breaking stuff but I used my manual and I did ok I just could figure out how the top part of the dash came off.
On the new insterment panle (when I find one) is there other light or switchs that a diffrent than my stock one I have now? Like fule pressure or something like that? And does all the other stuff just hook up the same?
When taking the instrament cluster off will this mess up my Mileage counter? Or does that just stay where it is? I mean I would hate to have accidently restet it or something like that. I know I am pretty sure I can't do that but I am just making sure that its really all that easy to do.

RE: 323, RPM Gauge
Long as you get a cluster from the same model of 323, I'm sure there are several year models that will interchange with yours. All you should need to do is remove the plastic bezel around the cluster, there are probably some hidden screws. once that is off there are only 4 screws holding the cluster in, then remove the electrical connectors and speedo cable...if it has one., not sure if speedo is electronic.
Like it was said on the previous post, it is "plug and play". They are interchangable, nothing needs to be changed.
As for the odometer, when you find a replacement cluster, whatever it says for mileage is what you start with. The odometer is mechanical. The car dosen't know what the previous mileage was. The mileage can be changed but you must be very careful when taking the cluster apart as internal parts are very fragile.
You don't have to remove the steering wheel, but you might have to take out the bolts that hold the steering column up and allow it to drop to gain access. My car had tilt steering so that was a big help allowing room to gain access without dropping column.

RE: 323, RPM Gauge
Ok cool so all I need to do is find a sutable cluster with an RPM gauge..
About the Odometer, would it be better if I just left it alone? I mean I would hate to find one that has way more miles on it than mine. I was just wondering if its really that hard to change the Odometer to what my mileage is now?
Any way with that I think I pretty much know what I can do know.
I am so getting a new cluster!!!!
Thanks guys!

RE: 323, RPM Gauge
If you get one with lower mileage all the better but if higher then you can just swap over the speedometer portion of the cluster and keep your old speedo/odometer. When you do find one give a post and I will do a complete teardown of mine with pictures so you can see what needs to be removed. Might just do the same as I do not have a tach either and would like one.
