Default 626/contour question

A friend of mine has a '96 Contour and the trans has basically shat itself. She said she's heard that the 626 trans will also fit. Is there any truth to the rumor? With the short production run of the contour/Mystique it's difficult and or expensive to get a trans for her car. If this is the case then it would alleviate the problem greatly.

The probe trans is the same but not sure on the contour. Do you know the trans designation name. The 626 uses an LA4AEL in the auto trans 4 cylinder.

Default RE: 626/contour question

I'm not sure I'll have to see if I can find out. I don't need a trans for a 626 unless it will fit the Contour... I'm just hoping it will as I can't seem to find anything but the manual trans for the contour/mystique. She has an auto. Maybe you'll have an idea what's wrong with her trans though? It doesn't seem to go into gear but once in a while. When it does it shifts into first then shifts hard into 2nd and refuses to shift into 3rd it seems. Then if she has to slow down and stop if it catches first again it will merely wind up and run the engine high but barely move (Obviously not fully in 1st). I'm guessing the belts are toast and it's merely not shifting right. I don't think that there's anything wrong with the gears what do you guys think?
