Unhappy 89 323 oil pump

Hi folks,
I think I need to replace the oil pump on my vehicle, but need a little help with the procedure. I'm pretty good with cars, but this one has me buffled. "reason for this " is due to--I feel there is no oil going to the lifters and they are clattering. I replaced two of the lifters thinking they were bad cause the plunger was not stiff, they are still clattering. Any help with this will be appreciated. Thanks a lot....
P.S. the engine is a 1.6L sohc / 4spd. manual..gt model hatchback.

What is your actual oil pressure? Just because the lifters arent getting oil doesnt mean the rest of the engine is starved. Find the oil pressure sending unit, remove it and install a temporary mechanical gauge to read actual pressure. You problem could be many things besides a bad oil pump such as a gummed up pickup screen, oil filter not bypassing oil, oil pressure relieve valve stuck or even a plugged up oil gallery.

X2 on what MazdaTirol said. If your oil pump was bad, you would have possibly burned up your engine by now. Clattering lifters could be a number of things.
Are they all clattering? 1 or 2 will sound like all of them are making noise. You can get a good engine cleaner and add to the oil on your next change. Add it to the old oil and let it idle for a bit and help clean the gunk out of your engine. And use a good quality oil, that will make a lot of difference.

Did you check the valve lash at all? I suppose you did since you changed some lifters. I would try "restore" in this engine. It fills cracks and scratches. My engines run quieter with it.

Hi mazdatirol, in answer to respond. I can check for oil press. due to no mechanical gage available. I changed the oil, filter and even cleaned averything with engine flush and took the pan down and cleaned it, checked the pick up tube-it was fine.
Still iam having a sowing machine in my motor.
Thanks for all your help....

Hi Mailman., I did just that, i een put 5w 10 in it, but Iam still getting the bothersome clattering. Iam getting ready to take the vlaves apart and check all the orifices to make sure they are not logged. I did not do that before...I'll let you know how that went...
Thanks for your help.
