98 626 2.5L Clacking Noise
Hello all,
I am experiencing a clacking noise from my 98 626 2.5L. I counted "clacks" while timing myself and figured out that the frequency is approximately 1/2 of the engine RPM in neutral. About 5 clacks per second when sitting at stop light. Wondering if any of you have experienced something like this and if so if you have any insights you are willing to share.
Thanks in advance! Will try to upload a video.

Time to make a DIY mechanic ear using a Philips screw driver a 12-18 inch piece of vacuum line and screw or bolt to go into the end. Then push the other end of the hose on the end of the Phillips screw drive. Now you can push the handle end lightly in your ear and hold the bolt on different are's of the engine. This way you can find the noise area much closer then the video.
You could even but a Mechanic's ear if you didn't want to make one.

hearing is a wonderful thing
FYI....You may find that a medical stethoscope will not work as good as you think unless you remove the "chest piece" and replace it with a bolt or large screw. The reason is the chest piece is specifically design to
cause the diaphragm to vibrate and then transmits that sound to the earpieces when placed on someones chest which is much different the random noises and sounds from a engine.
Here is my arsenal of diagnostic tools for hearing mechanical sounds.
