Default dealer cannot help me, can you suggest help

Hi all,
I was driving last Sunday and noticed that my automatic tranmission started to silp. It would not start from stop, then just take off.suddenly. I hear the engine turning faster than the car is going. I took it to the local dealer but they told me that I should go to a transmission specialist.Has this happened to you??

Thanks
frank

Is the fluid level proper? Does reverse work? Is the mileage high?

A yes to all three hints strongly at time for a rebuild or there may be debris getting caught ina valve.

Good luck.

yep, it's pretty widely known that the automatic transmissions in these cars (or any ford for that matter) aren't that great. it's a big shame, considering the rest of the car is exceptional. there are 3 ways to go about it. buy a transmission from a shop, get it rebuilt, (the first two are quite expensive, anywhere from $600-$1000 roughly, at least up here) or you can find one on ebay or someone else on the forum here. i have one from a 1993, and judging by your screen name, your car is a 1995 626. what i cannot assume is the engine size. PM sent.

Thank you to all that gave comments and to those that read this.

I had the tranny rebuilt and it cost a lot. I had the options of extended warranty and am cosidering it after receivi8ng this message:

'Mazda put a small ford transmission in thoes cars. MANY people have had trouble with them. They get toooo hot. We have a 1997 and the transmission get to hot if we drive it a long distance. The od light on the dash flashes, it shifts hard, the check engine light comes on. From everything I have researched thus far the transmission needs a transmission cooler. No mechanic shop will tell you this. Mazda put out a TBS about this problem.'

1. where can I find the TSB on this
2. Wpi;d you go for the extended warranty - good for 3 years.

Frank,
Any luck? I just purchased a 97 626 for my daughter a couple days ago. It is now shifting hard and the engine light came on. We just sold the Explorer we got her due to Ford Transmissions. I had no idea that Mazda was a Ford product....live and learn. But we do like the car. Only 72K on it and everything else seems to be ok. I would love to know about the trannie cooler. Is this something Mazda will take care of since it seems to be an oversight on their part?

Hi there, I did not get the 3 year warranty. The rebuilt tranny comes with one year or 12K KM.

The shop that rebuilt the tranny thought the cooler was not worth the cost and tried to steer me to the 3 year warranty.

I only use the car for trips around town. The problem of overheating is when you use it for long trips. I plan to sell the car in a year or two. Good luck.
