K, so he's gonna reprogram....Next: He talked to the local Mazda guys (naturally they know my situation)...the guy at the dealership says he's sure it's ecu...which it's looking like it will be. My question is if I have to replace the ecu, can I get a salvage, I hear talk of a one-time burn from immoby to ecu? If I get a reman will it allow this one time burn? or does this ecu only work if it comes from Mazda. If I have to get a 'Mazda' part I'd rather order it thru you since you've been such a help, but if a reman will save me some money I'd really rather go that route. I'm out over $500 and haven't even paid this latest mechanic yet...
Most reputable reman ecu sites ask for VIN/Mileage, etc...what else do I need to be sure of?
Also how will Immoby/Keys be affected?

Yes there is a one-time burn for the immoby code into the ECU. Once it is input then computer will only work for that car. I would imagine that the reman units would have to cleared or reset to allow new code or they would be pretty much useless. Mazda is able to reset, rebuild, and resell as remaned unit so could not see why an aftermarket would not be able too as well. How much are the remaned units being sold for?? The only spooky thing about buying a reman to me is "Why did it need to be rebuilt in the first place and was it truly fixed??" Definitely would want to make sure that a good warranty is offered. A new ECU is available from www.onlinemazdaparts.com for $389.04 plus shipping if that helps any. Part number has actually superceeded to a KLS5-18-881E. Keys are not affected at all by ECU change but will need to be programmed. Not 100% sure but I believe that the ECU needs to have the as-built data extracted before removal and transfered to the new ECU as they come blank of vehicle specific info.

The KLS5 ECU is for Federal emission, auto trans, with immobilizer by part number. Will have to find out more about the as-built data transfer and if it applies to your car. Shop manual does not mention it but it sometimes does not.

I spoke to Jason @ the Montgomery Mazda(onlinemazdaparts.com)...He said could maybe be transponder ring or new keys...but sounds like a bad ecu. He also said it was plug 'n' play...just recode the code word to the new ecu as the mechanic is doing today w/ old ecu...
