Default Gear Box oil and timing belt

Hello All!

I have a 1993 Mazda 323. I would like to change the gear box oil. Could someone tell me how this is done and what type of oil I must use and how much????. Currently, I'm in upstate New York. Will the COLD be a factor as to the oil type I use?

I also recently had a new clutch installed. Work cost me $560.00. Was this a good deal? The mechanic suggested a new timing belt but I first wanted to see here if someone may know of a way to determine a timing belts condition and if it's time for replacement..

I certainly appreicate your insight and suggestions.....

Happy Holidays!!!!!

The best oil to use is 75-90W gear oil for lube. It depends what engine you have is the capacity of the trans. There should be a drain plug on the bottom of the trans to drain the fluid. I have attached a pic that displays how to check the fluid level in the trans...you use the speedometer gear.

For the timing belt, it is best to have it replaced about every 60,000 miles.

Thanks bkey71 for the info and advice. As per the Timing Belt, do you know if it is possible to check if a change is warranted or is the process so big that once your in you better make the change???

If you do not know when it was last replaced, it would be best to have it done. You can remove the upper cover over the timing belt to inspect for any fraying or cracks. Winter is coming soon and being broke down is not something you wanna have to think about.
