Please Help - 1999 Mazda 626 - car will not change gears
I have a 1999 Mazda 626 - 4cyl. It was working fine yesterday. but, this morning, the gear shifter has no effect on the car. I can move the shifter from park to reverse to neutral to drive. but, nothing make a difference on the car. it will not shift gears.
i checked the transimisson fluid. it is like new (clear red) and full.
what could be the problem? is it the transmission? thanks a lot for help in advance.

I wish I had a suggestion for you to check out, ptrshah, but I don't know anything about them. I'm not that good w/Autos (ATX transmissions) anyway. I've been a manual driver for over 30 yrs now.
But I do want to welcome you to the forum and hope that somebody knows what to say!! Welcome!! Sorry about your problem.

Does the gear shifter feel like it is doing anything? On my 2000 626, the gear shift cable retainer at the transmission linkage had crumbled away. The only thing keeping the cable attached to the tran. linkage was luck. Follw the gear shift cable down to the transmission and make sure it is still connected.

as someone else mentioned check the linkage 1st if thats not the problem i would severely advise changing your transmission filter, if its clogged no matter how new the fluid is it cant move to the transmission itself to even select a gear, and if you do select a gear it acts as if its in nutrel, if the problem still happens after changing the fliter, check your linkage from the tranny to the engine itself, if its lose you may not be getting a connection between the two, last of all and hopefuly for your sake this is not the problem but if you stripped your broke your main connector........the tranny might be junk, try all of the above before replacing it and good luck :-)

i think its your transmission
my mazda 626 did this to me at work. i drove the car to work and when i got out of work the car turned on fine but it didn't go into any gears not ever reverse. i spend about $1,600 putting in a used transmission.. I just hope its not your tranny but i believe its because the transmission were made by ford on the 1999 models..

This Happened to me Yesterday. The bushing that connects the trans. cable to the tran is gone. I put the cable on the trans myself just so I could get it home. The small bushing that fits over the cable cannot be found anywhere. Mazda said the only solution is to buy an entire cable from them for $140.00! Anyone know where to find that bushing? 1999 626 LS

A bad and problem prone automatic transmission.
The limited research I have done claims that the auto trans Mazda used from '98-'02 was/is a POS and is very prone to problems at some time in its life.
Also, used transmissions from a junkyard (if you can find anybody willing to sell you one) are a crap-shoot at best as well. Used parts places are reluctant to sell them due to returns on faulty units.
Should've bought a manual trans car.... Little goes wrong with them, like a worn clutch, in stock trim.
