Default Remote to car sensor issue

I have a '99 626 with an aftermarket alarm (I believe) and the connection between the remote to lock/unlock the car and enable/disable the alarm is horrible. Basically, whether I'm walking to my car and trying to unlock it or walking away and trying to lock it, the remote only wants to work when it decides to, which seems to be less and less. The remote only seems to work about half the time or less now. I have replaced the remote batteries thinking the remote was the issue, but the results remained the same. I'm thinking that perhaps the remote sensor within the car may be going out or dying itself. I would like to check it and see if there is a way to test it, however, I have no idea where this sensor would be located in my car, nor do I know how I would test it to make sure it's still fully functional. I'd appreciate anyone's help with advising me on what I should do, how I can find the sensor within the car and how to test it. Thanks.
