Unhappy 1988 B2200 Fuel Economy bad

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a b2200 off my buddy. It is in great shape truck with an automatic trans and completely stock mechanically. I was wondering what sort of fuel economy I could expect from an auto?
I'm getting about 13.5L per 100km at the moment which I think is high it has a small tank so filling up every 300km seems pretty silly. So far I've checked the spark plugs, they are bpr6's, they were replaced by previous owner but look a little sooty and checked the o2 connection plug which seems all nice and clean. From what I understand the There's not too much to tune on the carb, the stock carb main jets are ecu controlled via solenoid, all you can realy adjust are idle mixture and idle air which probably wouldn't effect the fuel economy too greatly. Are there any other things that I could do? thanks any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum

The basic testing on any engine is to health verify its condition.

Compression test both wet and dry
Cylinder leak down test

Visually looking at spark plug really is useless their is a proper way to check them but few go to the trouble
A short run on an oscilloscope can verify not only the ignition system but other general engine health area's
A short RPM test at the tail pipe with a EGR (exhaust gas analyzer) can give important information to include with the other tests

Naturally many of these are not available for the average DIY and the need to have a shop do them.

We have a couple of good members that know these models well and I know will pop on with some good advice in the DIY area to your questions.

As it is an automatic itis very important that you ask your friend when if any was the last service done and what was it. If none or over 40k miles ago then it is very important that you get at least a pan drop and fluid change. This will help you visually see what has settled in the pan and pan magnet (if it has one). Also visually look at the valve body for varnish formation.

Welcome to the forums!
After doing some conversions, it looks like you are getting about 17.5 miles to the gallon. You did not mention if that was highway use, or around town with stop & go traffic. Maybe a mix of both? Regardless, it is probably not far off for an auto trans B2200 TRUCK. Keep in mind that these trucks were designed to pull trailers and carry loads in their beds......they will not get the fuel economy that a Honda Civic will get.

Hi thanks for your reply.

After having the truck for a few weeks now its getting about 13 mpg Driving on the highway 8km to work there and back at approx 70-80Km/hr (45-50 pMhr) average speed, so I think there is room for improvement somewhere.
