Default 2007 Mazda B4000 - won't go into 4X4

Hi,
My Mazda B4000 was always temperamental going into 4 x 4, but now doesn't want to go at all. When I try to put the truck into 4 x 4 high or low, the it will not engage, nor do the lights work (but they do light up when i start the truck). I can hear a clicking noise that seems to be coming from the dash. I did some reading about this, could be the Transfer Case Shift Motor, but not sure how to determine this is the issue. I found a replacement shift motor in-stock, and am willing to change it myself, just not sure at this point I want to spend 250.00 to lay in the snow if I am wrong . Anyone have suggestions how to determine if it really is the transfer case shift motor? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
