94 B2300 pickup freeze plug problem HELP!
i have my truck at a shop right now doing about 900 dollars worth of work but on top of all that my freeze plugs are rusted an need replaced. the mech said there was 3 of them and all three need replaced...i had other mechs look at it and they also said freeze plug...i am wondering if i can replace these freeze plugs myself since the mech is charging 75 an hour and would need 3 hours to replace the plugs...the leak is coming out of the passenger side of engine block by the exhaust manifold...it is only one solid stream of water....please help soon cuz i need to make a decision soon...

Hey T. I have a '92 B2200 and Just had all but one freeze plug done. I was gonna do it myself but there was was too much stuff that needed to be removed. I have 6 total on mine. Two were leaking and decided to have them all done at the same time. The only one that didn't get replaced was the one in the back of the engine because they would have had to drop the tranny to get to it. My mech told me that when I need to get the clutch replaced he would do the last plug at the same time for free. Or if it starts leaking he would give me a big discount for doing the clutch. I have a good mech. Freeze plugs can get pretty involved if they have to remove a bunch of components like mine. I got the old plugs and you could see the wear/corrosion on 3 of them so it was pretty inevitable that it was gonna be sooner than later before the others would have started leaking too. So it might be wise to have your mech do them all at the same time. It took my guy about 9 hours to do mine with all the crap he had to take off. I would hold your guy to the 3 hour or $225.00 for all charge though. It's pretty involved. I'm lucky I have a mech who likes me (I always tip him with a case of beer).
