When both these lights are on, that means the abs (anti lock brake) system sees a failure. Your normal brakes will work fine with no problem, you just do not have anti lock if you need it. You need to have the brake system codes read by a scan tool to know what the computer is seeing. It is most likely a wheel speed sensor (there are more than one) that is dirty or has gone bad.

I guess I'll pick a warmer day (-7C right now ) to have a look.
I think the abs sensor is mounted near the rear diff?

It depends if you have rear wheel antilock or four wheel. If just rear wheel, the sensor should be located in the differential. If four wheel, there is also a sensor on each front wheel along with the differential.
