The 90 b2200 engine has developed a significant drivability problem.

Its a rebuilt engine with about 50k miles on it. Weber 32/36 DGEV carb. We had a worn needle that caused flooding a while back and replaced the needle with genuine Weber part. Problem solved and ran good for about a month.

Now its acting up in a different way. When accelerating for a short bit it will bog down. It feels like its either running out of gas or like it lost ignition. If you let off the gas and wait a few seconds it will recover. But once you try to work it a little bit again it goes back to bogging. Its bad enough that its difficult to get it up past 40mph or so.

We checked fuel lines for blockage and they are clear. Fuel filter is clear. We put a pressure gauge on the line and ran it for a few seconds and the pump is putting out 4psi, although we have it on a regulator at 3psi. We tried adjusting the float higher but only got flooding conditions. We gradually lowered the float level in small increments until it was no longer flooding and were right back where we started as far as adjustment goes and the bogging condition still exists.

Are there any ignition conditions that can be intermittent like this and mimic fuel starvation? Any other suggestions on what to check are greatly appreciated.

I think we have a bad float. Saturated on one side and therefore loss of buoyancy. To keep it from flooding we had to lower the float to the point where starvation then became the problem. See the video below. Doesn’t this confirm a bad float?

I would think that float is bad as well; and it is stamped with genuine Weber logo too, so can't blame on a clone....

Ive ordered a brass float to replace it. Im suspicious that elevated levels of ethanol in todays gasoline breaks these plastics down over time. This plastic float lasted about 40k miles.

Here it is. It installed already and the truck runs great! No flooding and no bogging. Gets up to speed just as it should 🙂

You may have stumbled on to a possible problem and a cure for several other B-truck owners that have complained about bogging down and not having enough power to go up a hill. I have seen others post about this in here and other forums.........so, if they have a Weber carb, and it has a plastic style float, it could definitely be their issue!

Glad you found this out......it can help others I'm sure. I have always been one to "investigate" an issue when I am confronted with something like what you encountered......take it apart and study it! And it usually pays off for you! Good job!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I try to help through sharing whenever I can. And I’m also one of those types that not only wants to make things work, but wants to know how they work, or don’t work for that matter.

BTW , we need a new grommet for the PCV valve in the valve cover. Are those difficult to find for these trucks? Ours is hardened and to valve doesn’t fit securely anymore.

Grab a Mazda one from your local dealer, or order one online.......Jim Ellis Mazda Parts, in Atlanta is where I go online, to search the part numbers for factory parts.......but then Google the part number.......you'll find cheaper online Mazda parts dealers to buy from.
