Question A/C Compressor not working on its own, Have to hit it hard to get it going

HI!
2009 B2300 2.3L Manual
My compressor won't engage by turning **** on climate control...I have to open hood and knock it into function with something heavy and hard (usually my tomahawk hehe). As far as I can tell, fuses are good and compressor turning when truck is running. So, when I do get it running by hitting compressor, it blows slow at first, then eventually gets to full power. If I turn **** to off position, I cannot turn it back on while driving (or idle). Just bought this old boy from a friend over winter so haven't used A/C much til now. Also, this is an issue including heat, defrost, anything that is controlled by the thermostat ****. Any ideas are appreciated. I am interested in finding a solution other than overhaul, if possible, and other than taking to a shop. Thank you forum!

A/C is cold in max function, and heat is hot in all functions, while running.

Hitting any part on any vehicle to get it to function.......this is a sign that a part needs to be replace

Hmmmm - I wonder if the AC clutch air gap has gotten too large due to wear over time, why tapping it with a tomahawk or hammer gets it to engage. Many AC compressors have a shim or two under the AC clutch, and one can be removed to decrease the air gap and bring back into specifications.

I'm linking a post I made doing similar on my 1998 Nissan Frontier truck back in 2019, and that fixed it. See Post #73 here https://www.clubfrontier.org/threads...page-4#replies

Thank you, I figured as much. Anything I can try before A/C overhaul was my main interest here. Much appreciated.
