Changing front axles on a 1987 B2600 4x4
Trying to pull the rotor/hub assembly so I can service the CV axle boots. The book is calling for a special tool 49-s231-635 to pull the hub from the spindle. Anybody have any tips on this? Can I just use a 3 jaw puller and grab onto the rotor instead?

Hmmm.....On my 1993 B2600i, I just removed the 6 hub bolts (10mm) and the splined end of the hub slid off. ALWAYS use a 6 point socket when removing these bolts! The bolts are conical shaped and therefore are on there pretty good, especially if they are rusty........and I wouldn't use an impact on them......you can round the corners of the hex bolts pretty easily! Ask me how I know this!
Once the end of the hub is off, there is a circle clip that needs to be removed, then remove ball joint and steering joint (after loosening the torsion bars to take pressure off of the A-arm) and then slide the assembly off the CV axle, and remove axle from the front diff. housing.

On this '87 there's a locking washer with 2 holes and a spanner type wrench is needed to spin them off, then the hub/disk assembly slides right off the axle. I used a huge set of needle nose pliers for the job

Ah....yes! I remember now! There is a nut, not a clip.......it's been a while since I worked on it....and I'm old! Glad you got it opened up. I have to swap out my front differential with another used one, and then rebuild my original unit.....I already have the new CV axles.
