Crank hub seal

Crank hub seal
This I think is evidence of the crank hub seal leaking. Do you concur? Is this common?
We already sealed the stuff higher up and all of that work was successful. I thought the stuff up higher was the only problem. Obviously not.

When we rebuilt the engine 50 k miles ago, I think I remember the new oil pump had a crank hub seal already installed in it. That explains why I have an extra hub seal already on hand. The one in the gasket kit wasn’t needed then.
Interestingly, we bought another complete gasket kit this second time around. I replaced the cam front seal this time but the second crank seal is also still on hand. I just noticed when I compared the old cam seal to the unused crank seals, they appear to be the same.
Am I safe to assume that on this 90 B2200 engine that the front cam and front crank hub seals are the same size? It’s difficult to research by part numbers because the front crank seal sets listed also include a pickup tube gasket and an oring. That might explain different part numbers when trying to compare to the cam seal. Anyway, when holding the old cam seal together with the new crank seals, they appear to be the same

The crank seal that came pre installed in the new oil pump was total crap from day one. It practically fell out on its own. It was hard and brittle after only 50k miles. Got a good quality seal in there now. Leak fixed.
Good quality on left - Junk on right

I had the same issue on one of my B2600i's front crankshaft oil seal.......except it FELL OUT, while driving!! I was very lucky that day......my Daughter was using the truck to get to work and back (for the past several months), and by chance, after work, we went out to eat dinner that evening (Wife was out of town, but driving back home at the time) at a Zaxbys, that is close to our home (1-1/2 mile or so). I had not driven that truck in a couple of months, so I drove (instead of the Daughter) to the Zaxbys. Wife got into town and met us there. After eating, the Daughter rode back to the house with the Wife, and I drove the B2600i home.
When we arrived at the Zaxbys, I could smell oil......and thought it was the beater parked next to us......surely it wasn't MY pride & joy! On the drive home, I pulled up to a red light, and my Oil Light flickered on! WTH? Light turned green about the same time, so I pulled away from the light, very easily......no oil light......I watched for the oil light as I creeped home......as I slowed down to turn into my driveway, oil light flickered on again! I shut the engine off, and coasted into the yard.
Upon inspection, I could see that the front oil seal (it was replaced right after I bought the truck, years earlier) had "pushed out" and the engine had dumped out most of it's oil! The underside of the truck was coated! This truck NEVER leaked any oil, up until that point. I installed a new "Made in Japan" oil seal.......and the old seal that was in it, was one that I had bought locally at a chain auto parts store, and it had "Made in Taiwan" printed on it! I measured the outside diameter of both oil seals, and the Taiwan seal was definitely smaller, by a couple hundred thousandths.
Had I not taken that truck to dinner that night, and my daughter drove it to work the next day, I would have been rebuilding that low mileage factory engine!!! Got lucky for sure!

Glad you caught it before any damage was done.
Im not sure about the 2.6 but the 2.2 crank gear position won’t allow the seal to actually fall out.
I also took measurements comparing the bad seal with the new one and confirmed substantial difference. I measured both inside and outside diameters. Here they are in mm. Look at the inside diameter difference, not than a mm.
Old inside diameter
new inside diameter
Old outside diameter
New outside diameter

To clarify my previous post, when I say it practically fell out on its own, I mean after I had the crank gear off. I simply poked it with a sharp metal pick on the edge and it popped right out. I’ve never had a seal come out that easily.

Yes.....on the B2600i, the front crankshaft oil seal can't actually "fall out" as the harmonic balancer will keep it from doing that......but it pushed completely out of it's bore, and it dumped the crankcase oil out, quick!
I have the pictures on my older laptop, but not on this one.......but I do have a pic of the Taiwan seal installed, back about 13 years ago!
