Default Mazda Pickups with Toyota engines?

I am thinking of doing an engine conversion using a VW 1.9 TDI - turbo diesel direct injection - into a Mazda Truck now the trick is there is already an adaptor kit made by ACME ADDAPTORS that couples the VW TDI engines to Toyota transmissions so I was wondering if any of the Mazda trucks came with the 22RE engines and if so which ones and which years? - I really like the 93 B2600i 4X4 extra cabs ( : and I am assuming they have a 2.6 litter engine there in - are they Mitsus? or did any of the B2600i have the 2.2 Toyota engine or are they not the B2200is? If so what years - and thanks for the help on this - just getting started so don't know but I like the feasibility of Mazda Trucks verses Toyota!
Thanks
Stephen

No Mazda has ever come with a Toyota engine. The 1987 B2600 was the only Mitsubishi engine used in the US. All others were Mazda until 1994 when US models became Mazda badged Fords.

Ford used alot of Mazdas engines going back to the early 80's. Ford kept buying Mazda stock and eventually got controling interest. If Ford had not gained control of Mazda then Mazda would be much better positioned now since the Mazda trucks were 70% of their sales when Ford forced the Mazda badged Ranger on the US market.
There is not much else you can do unless you want to go into the engine or install a turbo. You can bore it and put coated pistons in it. Deck the block and shave the head. Have a cam ground for it. Balance the crank and get a lighter flywheel. Change the diff gear ratio etc. All it takes is money.
