Headers, Different carb/intake setup would be the easiest. I think Weber makes a carb for it. Keeping the valves adjusted and cylinder head retorqued does wonders for power.

There are companies that sell a weber carb kit for converting the truck. There is the 32/36 which is the most common, it is a progressive carb and usually does a good job and increasing the fuel milage and performance of the truck. Then there is the 34/34 many people complain about that one. There is also the 38/38 it is mainly a performance carb and the primary and secondary open at the same time. Many people adapt Holley 5200s which where liscensed from weber but require more know how since there are several dozen different variances.

Pacesetter makes a set of headers, importperformanceparts.net has performance valves that interchange from the 8-valve 626. Many rear wheel drive transmissions can be easily modified to fit by swapping out the bell housing and tail housing. I'm running a miata transmission in mine which does nice, gives it more of a car feel instead of shifting every 10 mph. LSD from the 1st and 2nd gen RX-7s can be interchanged if you know how to change and align the ring and pinion. The rest is pretty much engine building and would either require head work or rebuild work.

There is all kinds of information on the following page:

Sure if he wants to modify the intake manifold and convert to a distributorless ignition....
