Default New to me 1987 B2600

Hello all,

Alas a medical emergency caused a snafu with my ‘92 B2600 and a weather change cracked my block. So… I have a parts truck now.

A couple of days ago I obtained a 1987 B2600 that’s fairly straight. It had been sitting in the woods for a couple of years. Cylinders 2 and 3 had low compression. I’m hoping a head gasket will solve the issue.

She started and the low oil pressure light stayed on. I’m getting a pressure gauge and will test it. There was a high whine, my mentor seemed to think the timing chain needs attention.

I live off grid and we don’t have to worry about emission stuff. To quote my mentor, we will take off all the science fiction (eg vacuum lines and emissions stuff) and swap to a solex carb. He’s done many of these conversions and I’m excited to learn.

Looks like $500 in parts and a gob of labor will sort her out. I still love Mazdas and wrenching. My other project is a ‘73 M35A2, I’m super stoked to get my 6x6 going too.

Cheers,

Spoon

No. It’s a solex that he does. A VW carb.

With the oil pressure light being ON......the whine that you're hearing could be the oil pump gears making noise because of a limited amount of oil on them. I have had this happen on a B2000 engine, and when I removed the oil pan, the oil pump pickup strainer was completely clogged up! A previous owner or "mechanic" apparently left the valve cover off for an extended amount of time while replacing the valve cover gasket....and all of the silicone gasket material that he scraped off of the cylinder head, right into the engine! Between the tree leaves and silicone, the oil pump pickup strainer was completely closed up.

You may want to pull the oil pan and clean things up in there, if you can't find anything else that is making the whining noise.........let us know what you find out! Thanks!

Default Digging in!

Hello all,

Been putting time into this truck. Started working on her yesterday.

Generally, when I tackle a massive project I like to clean my space and prepare. So a few hours cleaning up (procrastinating).

Wish I had concrete…

Much better.

Drained the coolant and oil and started pulling off the emissions stuff. Radiator and fan are out. PS pump moved/wired aside.

My mentor is coming tomorrow to help finish pulling the engine and mounting it on the stand. I’ll pull the hood and use a little backhoe for lifting.

I decided a rebuild is warranted. There are decent kits available and a quick hone and new rings makes sense. I’ll do oil pump and timing chain. Definitely making sure the oil strainer is clean. There’s a bunch of flaking RTV around the valve cover. If it’s outside, I’m sure it’s inside. Ugh.

A few other bits and bobs. Water pump. Solex carb. A single vacuum advance for the distributor. New batter leads.

Out here in BFE there’ll be shipping delays, but I’ll get her done.

More pics to follow.

Cheers,

Spoon

Turns out you are correct! It’ll be the Weber knock off 32/36. The solex doesn’t have enough flow for the purpose and the price is about the same.

Don't forget a balance shaft chain and bearing for your rebuild kit......or a BSE kit if you're getting rid of it

Spoon! On your 1992 truck, if you are going to make it a parts truck, would you happen to have the upper & lower fan shrouds on that truck? if they are intact, would you be willing to sell them? There is a member on another forum that needs those. Let me know, thanks!

Unfortunately, no. If I did, I would send them on.
