Default 2017 CX5 Grand Touring White 19,000 miles

Son is looking at a 2017 CX5 Grand Touring FWD (With Premium Package) White with 19,000 miles (Dallas Texas) (At a Toyota Dealership)

Has 10 months left on original warranty. Told him to avoid the 2018 - 2020 models for cylinder deactivation issues.

Dealership: Asking $23,500 (KBB was $22,500)

Is this a good deal if the car checks out (Told him to have a mechanic check it out)?

Thanks In Advance

I can't vouch one way or another on the price, but I will say my 2017 CX-5 GT AWD w/premium package has been a great vehicle. Almost 3 years and 34xxx miles and no major issues.
I agree that the '18-'20 models added unnecessary/ problematic tech with the cylinder deactivation. It also provides a negligible yield in MPG. As a matter of fact, if I were to replace my car today I can't say I'd buy a '20 model CX-5.

We bought our used 2017 Grand Touring AWD with 4500 miles from a Toyota dealer here in FL. Have owned it for 1.5 years to date.

We paid $24.4K plus tax and had a Toyota trade that brought us $8.5K . Still had balance of factory warranty and we used it for a few small items.

I always use Edmounds to compare prices. KBB seems to be overvalued.

As far as the price I would push for at least $3K less. Also get VIN and have a Mazda Service guy look it up for services done.

We have been pleased with the CX and really enjoy the safety features. We live in south east FL and our gas mileage average has been only 22 mpg.

Hope this helps in the deal.

I would go for the "18 model. I'm not a big fan of cylinder deactivation but I cannot stress enough the value of Adaptive Cruise. Plus, it will be big for resale in the future.

No problems with the cylinder de-activation since it has been taken care of with a recall / software update. We get great gas mileage in both city and highway driving with our 2018 CX-5, would highly recommend.

I always use Edmunds.com to get my base line on price of cars.Kelly BB always seems to be on higher side.

With the market we are in today, I would push the dealer for better price, or a free extended warranty. Would also think the finance rates would be attractive.

Good luck to your son. Just remember that dealers also have to generate revenue and the closer to month end just might help in the deal.

What do the update software does?. The Honda Odyssey 05+ EX-L and touring trim has the same system instead is called VCM (Variable Cylinder Management) and you don't see the damage after 80k+ miles some after 135k. So it is hard to say on a 2018-2020 if the update actually makes a difference. Basically in the Odyssey due to no having combustion in those cylinder it start to damage the ring in the Pistons1-3 and misfires and high Oil consumption are usually the first issue to pop up. Luckily there is an inexpensive device that can deactivate the VCM almost completely. Do we have any way to turn it off on the CX5 18+?
