They've been repairing the failed vehicles as they occur, including providing coverage past warranty, as in the other post below. So what else do you think they should they do - replace the head (or engine) on every CD-equipped engine, across all models? I personally would have absolutely no part of that, but it's ludicrous to expect such a thing anyway. And inspecting all CD engines for oil leaks would be just about a complete waste of time as well, because very little of the cylinder head is accessible for examination, even via a endoscope.

And filing complaints with the NHTSA is appropriate when an automaker is not acknowledging/repairing problems, which again is not the case here. So far they have been making the required repairs and have not tried to sweep the problem under the rug. But hey people are going to do what they do, so if you're getting a big kick out of doing this, then by all means full speed ahead.

If I'm understanding this correctly, Mazda is going to repair your engine even though the powertrain warranty has expired, and your complaint is that they're replacing the head instead of installing a new engine. If that's correct then IMO this is in no way 'the runaround' on the part of the automaker, who is only obligated to fully correct the problem (in whatever way they choose). You might want to consider that the automaker is exceeding what's legally required of them, by repairing your vehicle out of warranty. Yes it's unfortunate that this problem affected your vehicle, but $hit happens and the main thing is how it ultimately turns out. So you might just want to take a deep breath and give the head replacement repair a chance to prove itself.

Be advised that I'm no Mazda fanboy (or any other automaker for that matter), and don't normally take their side. And I also have a complete dislike for the CD change to the Skyactiv engines, and most certainly wish they had not stuck us with this CD crap. But what's done is done, and those of us with CD engines just need to hope that Mazda will stand behind their product and continue to make all future repairs on these engines, including out-of-warranty extensions as they have so far been doing.
I didn't keep posting information or anything to bad mouth this brand. I actually love Mazda otherwise I wouldn't buy a CX-5. I am just sharing what I am experiencing and looking to see if anything can be done. Yes, Mazda is taking care my problem. I am not creating a fear for people to scare this will happen on their model year of CX-5. It's just something other user can be aware of if this happens. When things happen to your vehicle, people want to look and search online of what and why it happened. That's all. Please do not take this too far!

Well, Mazda is only doing anything because we purchased a warranty, not out of the goodness of their hearts.

Imo, I did not purchase a new car to have it rebuild at a local dealership. When a major part fails at 66k they should make it right by replacing the engine.

Now is see why they only have a 60 k warrenty from the factory as they fail soon after that.

Ok, then the part about out-of-warranty coverage does not apply to your case, and it's unknown what would have happened if you did not have that. Time will tell how well Mazda supports this leaking head problem (and the CD issues) with extended, out-of-warranty coverage.

And I understand that you're upset about the leaking head - I would be as well. I don't think you'll have any success in getting an engine instead of the head replacement, but perhaps you can persuade them to do it. If not, hopefully they'll do good work and you'll get many more miles from your vehicle.

If anyone was 'taking this too far' it would be you, by posting multiple times to contact Mazda and file complaints with the NHTSA. My only points in my one post was to try to explain to you that Mazda can't currently do any more than what they're already doing, and that there is no wrongdoing on their part to complain about. Now this might change in the future, but it is what it is right now. But I have no interest in arguing about this with you (or anyone else), so I'm done posting on this subject.

I agree that they are not going to do anything. But I am getting tired of the warrenty people and Mazda telling me that replacing the head is not a big deal like it was an air cleaner.

In my world, that is a failure of a major internal engine component which should not have occured at 66 k. They decide on their suppliers and maybe saving 5 dollars a unit might not have been the best decision. But they made it not me. The junk yards are full of cars with similar problems.

Have a rebuild engine out of a local dealership is not my idea of a satisfactory repair.

Question - just how many CX-5 engines “fail” soon after 60,000 miles? I know of one, yours. But even if 5% failed, what do you expect? I understand that you are upset, I’d be too, but buying an extended warranty doesn’t mean that a failed rear axle means you get an entire new suspension. Can you find where in your warranty it states that Mazda will replace the engine if the turbo etc. falls off? What you think they should do has nothing to do with what they are obligated to do. Suggestion, once the engine is repaired sell the POS and buy a Toyota. Problem solved.

I am still in the mourning phase but you are correct. I had (past tense) believed that a supposedly reputable car manufacturer would stand behind it's products.

Lesson learned.

I agree with you that the way to go is to trade it for a Toyota.

Btw, love the name carpe diem, that is what I tell my kids every day. As to if they pay attention or not is up for debate.

One way to tell how many is for everyone with a problem to log it in the NHTSA database. Which I will do, if you are right if it is just a handful that is one thing, if it is many (you said 5% and I would view that as quite a few). than possibly it would be in their best interest to address the issue in a different way.

One man's opinion. Here is the link.

Spoke to the service manager today for a brief update on my vehicle. He stated that the reason Mazda having this oil leak issue is because the casting of the cylinder head wasn't doing correctly. And it creates a hairline type of leak on the cylinder head. The fix is they have the revised version of casting head to reinstall to the engine. He said Mazda have noticed about the issue and it may only affected small batch of CX-5.

I went into the shop area and took some pics. Service manager located where the oil leaks for me.
