Default 2018 CX-5 keys locked in car

Was under the impression that if the battery is sound then you should not be able to lock your keys in the car. However, my wife has done this twice recently by putting her purse in the car and then walking away.

Could the key fob be faulty or am I missing something here? Thanks.

That happened to me once. I put the key on the center console and went inside to get something, came back
and I was locked out. Other key didn't work, Push button on door didn't work. Had to crawl in through the rear hatch.
I now put the key in the door recess/grab handle area instead. Apparently it's the center console area that is the problem.
Did she put her purse on the center console??

Nope she puts her purse in the back seat but that makes me think. Maybe there's something in or material of the purse that's blocking the fobs communication with the car. Will test that.

Had a spare key made but hard to find a place to hide it. the key that is inside the 'clicker' is hard to get to, and that's assuming you have the other remote with you.

Oddly, it opened with the push button. Not fun with two bad knees.

Happened to me twice.
Vehicle running, keyfob in vehicle.
1st time, couldn't unlock with buttons, at home so got spare keyfob and still wouldn't unlock. Needed to use manual key.

2nd time, was away from home, stepped outside to clear snow from windshield with car running, door closed with keyfob inside. Doors locked so tried liftgate which opened. Heard doors click open then close.
Tried drivers door buttons which unlocked. The liftgate hatch must activated the fob so it's recognized again.
Now i dont remove my keys from pocket ever. Problem solved.

Did a bunch of reenactments with the key and purse and couldn't duplicate the problem. Ungh.

I always keep my FOB in my pocket.
But I deliberately locked my fob in the vehicle at home yesterday to see what happens.
The lift gate still works so you can get in to get your FOB.
Tha tis if you're spry enough to contort your body to get over the back seats.
