Question 2019 CX-5 keeps showing smart brake system Malfunction

Hi guys,

Recently, my 2019 CX-5 would randomly have 2 error message show up(Smart Brake System Malfunction and Forward Smart City Break Support Malfunction). I plan on selling the car soon but I am worried as people might think the car is broken. Both messages would randomly show up and I usually have to stop and restart the car for the message to go away. I currently drive when it is sunny and I have tried test such as hard break randomly/ behind someone else etc. Both times the error messages did not show but I can be driving in a lane by myself and the car would randomly jerk for a bit before the messages shows up.

These pictures happen in a 5 minute span: https://imgur.com/a/1FS8miv

I am not sure what else to do so many help is greatly appreciated.

The next time this happens, and you're not in a hurry to be somewhere, find an auto parts store, park the vehicle, but don't shut it off. With it running and locked, go into the store and ask them to scan for codes. Assuming that one or more codes show up, write them down in the order they're read and post them on this thread.

We had the same issue, however when it happened the car decided to actually throw its brakes on. After multiple trips to the dealer it turns out the turbo was broken and the car was suffering with carbon build up (diesel BTW) only owned the car for a short period of time and wasn't covered under warranty so we had to front the bill £2800!!!. But coukd be something simple as cleaning the sensors on the windscreen.

Ok for sure; what should I ask the employees at the auto part store? If they could scan the codes in my car?

Yes, ask them exactly that.
AutoZone in my area will do it for free as the employees like getting out of the store.

I'll definitely check Autozone out. I was also told on Reddit that it might be a low tire pressure as well. Was that the same case in your situation?

I've never had an issue yet with CX-5 my scan requests were brake light issues on my BMW Z3.
Just pointing out where you can get a free code scan.

That's one of many possible guesses, although if the tire pressure indicator isn't lit up, that one likely goes into the waste basket. I don't ever want to make a repair based on a guess alone. Diagnosis is the key to working effectively and increasing the chances of ending up with a good outcome at the lowest possible cost. And for the problem you described, checking for OBD codes is the automatic starting point for diagnosis, just as it would be for many other issues as well.

Although finding out what codes are currently set may not be enough to positively identify the issue, codes will very often point the way to other testing which does lead to the problem getting resolved. If you can find out what the codes are, this forum might be able to provide further help to you. But without them, all we can do is make guesses, just like everyone else.

Hey so I got my tires check. My tires were all good and that was not the problem. I am going to the dealership to get it fixed. Thank you for your help!

Hey, so I went to Autozone and they could not find out what's wrong with my car. They think it a problem with the front sensor but their scanner could not find it because the warning sign comes and goes. So I'm going to the dealership. Thank you for your help!
