Default 2021 CX-5 GTR Oil Filter

I have just received oil filters from a Mazda dealership for my new GTR. Stock number 1WPY-14-302

These are smaller than ones used on my Snapper 28" riding mower. Are these correct? ....for a 2.5 liter turbo ...???!!!

Yes it is. Modern trend is to smaller and smaller oil filters for some reason.
Cost? That filter is made in Mexico. The filter for the NA engine in made in Thailand.
They look identical.
I went oversize when I changed oil on my GTR, Fram XG 7317.
I added a magnetic drain plug as well.

1WPY-14-302 for the 2.5 turbo sykactiv engine.
1WPE-14-302 for the rest of the petrol skyactiv range.

When I did the first oil change on my 2021 Signature (turbo) I used the 1WPY-14-302 filter, but the factory filter was PY8W-14-302 which I'm told is no longer available. Or maybe just not available in the US?
The OEM filter was a slightly larger diameter than the replacement; not really noticable except that the socket style oil-filter wrench that fit the new filter was too small for the OEM filter. Luckily it was not over-tightened and I was able to loosen it by hand after wrapping a piece of 80-grit emery paper around it.

Thanks for the video, useful info. Thanks for the video, useful info. I have a second Dodge car but choosing a fuel filter is important for any car. I recommend buying only original Fuel Filters for diesel units. Today the choice of filter elements for diesel vehicles is enormous. Therefore, when buying, it is important for you not to fall for fake products. I buy filters only here 6.6 Duramax Diesel Fuel Filter because I know only the original and they will help you with the choice.

Small Oil filter have been around and used for decades. Somewhere in the 70's dual filters and the biggest filter you could install on your engine became a trend. Mostly because of off roaders and misconceptions about how a oil filter works, and those MYTHs never really went away. LOL

The OEM size filter for normal use, normal being daily drivers and not exposed to extreme dusty operating environments in which case sooner oil and filter service are highly recommended and keeping up on the factory recommended oil /filter service is all you need to do. There is no real advantage or need for any oil filter except a standard size OEM for the vehicle oil filter replacement. I would at least use a branded name and not the generic oil filters.
I may as well also toss in that converting to a larger than OEM oil filter will not increase the oil capacity in any large amount to have any real advantage nor will it help or lower the oil operating temperatures.

True enough. A larger filter would increase, or at least allow, oil flow. Then too, The standard OEM filters use by most all
auto makers aren't all that efficient. (95% @30 microns?).
The Orange Fram ($4)or the standard SuperTech (Wal-Mart) ($3) filter do that well.
Top line filters (pick a brand) are somewhat better at getting the smaller particles out of the oil system.
The point being, Better filters don't flow as well as the 'looser' entry level filters.
These are minute amounts and don't matter to the average Joe.
I've always used a 'better' if not the 'best' filter on any car I've serviced or owned. I like my Mazda so
I installed a Fram UG7317. The bench mark for consumer filters.

Ya I hated the info on microns the average person has no clue the real meaning and extent of the number. But it makes for great way to sell a filter. LOL
I use OBERG oil filters on most all my performance engines, and they don't filter that small. LOL
As far as flow that was also a way to promote filters from some brands. None of the flow rate charts would really adversely the engine in any way even if it were ROAD TRACK on a 24hour or greater event. LOL Been there and done that back in the day ran the BAJA and you will like this I ran dual FRAM oil Filters. LOL Even I believed back then 2 is better to run then one oil filter. MYTH! lol

FRAM is always my first choice when I do need to purchase more oil filters.
FRAM also sponsored me for years, so I am partial to FRAM oil filters. But I do only use the FRAM original Orange

I also want to point out that I have used several brands on my MAZDA 2.5 and all the oil analysis were the same. Not one oil filter was better than the other. You can visit my thread to see all the different filter and oil analysis results.

Great conversation Dennis !
