Actual MPG's

My MPG average after first fill up
I just filled up for the first time and do mostly city driving and averaged 26.9 mpg. My husband assured me that I will get better once the engine is broke in. I only have 338 miles on it now. Bought it with only 22 miles on it.

I have the same car. 2014 CX-5 Grand Touring AWD + Tech Package. I am on my fourth tank of gas and I am averaging about 22.5 MPG. I am not an aggressive driver. I contacted the dealership I bought my car at to see if they would look at it and they said no, because the computer light is not on. So I called Mazda USA and had a case opened there. They called my dealership and forced them to look at my car. Which resulted in the technician taking my car and driving it for 26 miles.
He got my mileage up to 26 MPG which is the highest I have ever seen it. However, he drove it back to the dealership and in between when he parked it and when they drove it back for me to pick up it was already back down to 24 MPG. By the time I got home (10 minutes later) it was back down to 22 MPG.
I am hoping there is a Class Action lawsuit or a recall or something at this point. I have no idea what to do next.
I live in Portland, Oregon area. I bought my car at Herzog-Meier in Beaverton. I buy 87 octane fuel from Chevron.

I always do my calculations for my MPG by hand, so I will be very curious to see how this tank does.

I have the 2013 CX-5 automatic and I've noticed couple of things that obviously makes sense when driving city vs highway. 1) If I drive conservatively in the city my mpg is between 28 to 26. 2) Driving aggressively in the city my mpg drops to 24 to 21 mpg. 3) Driving conservatively on the highway I receive between 35 to 31 mpg at (60 - 70 mph). 4) Aggressive driving on the highway acheives 30 to 26 mpg at (75 - 85 mph). The CX-5 is a great gas saving small CUV if you drive sensibly but will make you pay at the pump like any other car if you're constantly flooring it.

I averaged out actual MPG's my first few tank fill ups and the in-dash gauge seems to be pretty accurate. I have a 6 spd and I average 33.5 MPG's...50% Highway (60 MPH) and 50% city (@30MPH and lots of stop/start).

I'm confused by all the low MPGs being reported.
I drive mostly city with some up and down hill (nothing extreme... just normal city hills in San Diego) and I averaged 29.1. After my car was serviced I think it got reset. It got down to 26 because I was doing almost all city driving, but is now back up to 28.5. If I go up to LA a bit more it'll continue to go up. I average 300+ miles a tank... though sometimes I fill up before getting too close to empty so it could probably be pushed a bit more.
I have a FWD Automatic Grand Touring. Don't drive lots as I work from home. At about 6,500 miles after 6 months of owning the vehicle.

I drive up and down hills...nothing too steep more like gradual inclines and declines. I live in Colorado so take it for what it's worth. I took a trip to Denver which is about 75 miles away at a lower elevation and I was really paying attention to the throttle and I averaged 38MPG on the way there.

In urban/freeway driving, I've averaged 33.63 mpg for the first 1180 miles with my new CX-5 Sport 6 spd manual. Took a 150 mi trip yesterday. For the first 75 miles, indicated mpg was 38.1. At 150 mi, indicated mpg was 37.0 mpg. I am a "hypermiler" and have been pleasantly surprised at how much you can squeeze out of the CX-5 manual.

That's HUGE!! Did you put a supplimental sail on the thing or something to achieve that kind of mileage?
I know this thread is about the CX not the 3 series, but speaking as one who tries to balance w/mileage and still maintain the "fun-factor" of driving, the best I have ever done with my 3 around town was 30mpg, and that was a terribly boring week. Upshifting way earlier than normal. Not downshifting at all, and staying under the speed limit as often as was possible.
Normally I still achieve between 27 - 28 mpg, so the difference is still not huge.

Hello all. Just bought my cx-5 last Saturday. Put 430 miles on the dealer tank and filled up with 11.4 gal, for a hand calculated 37.4 mpg. This was 70% hwy and 30% city miles. Often on the hwy the display was averaging 40. Amazing car. I do some hypermiling stuff like coasting up to red lights. Awesome car! Still had two bars left. How many gallons is this left if I could only put in 11.5 gal?
