Question Cargo Cover-can't unhooked from hatch hooks

I cannot seem to get these infernal hooks to unhook the retractable cargo cover. The retractable cover has two cutouts to match the two hooks mounted on the inside of the hatch. These cutouts are crossed by little metal bars that catch onto the hooks. But I cannot seem to get the verdamt hooks to unhook from the little bars. Am I insane, idiotic, or is there some "trick" to it that I'm missing?

Hold the two handles and pull the cover upwards so that "springs" are pressed together, then the cover can easily be pulled free of hooks.

assembled in reverse order

When you are pulling the cover back and meet resistance, push up a bit, then you can get it the rest of the way off. There's a sort of catch on the top of the bracket, which I figure is designed to keep the cover from popping off while the car is in use. You can look at if after the cover is off, it's hard to describe.
