disappointed with gas mileage
I bought my 2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring with AWD last August. While there are many things that I love about it, I am very frustrated by the fact that I am averaging only 23 MPG. One of the main reasons that led me to purchase this vehicle was the reported gas mileage because I am on the road all the time. I knew I probably wouldn't get 30+ MPG because I got the AWD package and I do a fair amount of city driving in addition to highway driving and driving on back rural roads; however, I had expected to do much better than what I'm getting. I've only gotten excuses from the dealer - they told me I should buy better gas and that I must drive really fast... I'd love some thoughts from the group - is this what other drivers are finding or could there be something wrong with my vehicle?

I am getting 31mpg (7.5l/100km) on my cx-5. It is mainly highway driving. The number one variable on any vehicle for mpg is driving style. I use the instant mpg gauge and try to cruise it at 6-7l/100km while on the highway. If you rev it up hard from stops only to slow down half a block, then your mpg will be way down. This will be the case for any vehicle.

I just got my CX-5 on Monday so I can't report on what I'm getting. I agree with the above poster about how your driving style can impact your MPG.
You said that you do a "fair amount" of city driving, hwy, and on rural roads. The percentage of time you spend on these types of roads will impact your MPG as well. If you're doing the majority of your driving in the city and on rural roads, 23 -25 MPG probably is right.

Dilly Dallying around the city and waiting for stop lights/traffic is the enemy! Engine warm-up is also not good mileage situation.
Jack rabbit take offs from a stopped position is not good.
The only time you get good gas mileage is in high gear, period!.
I personally know that my car doesn't go in to high gear until I reach speeds over 70 km/hr.
