Older and newer CX5 owner
Have a 2015 CX5 that still runs great with 100k on it. Nothing other than brakes ever done to it. Went to test drive a 2023 Rav4 with my daughter. Wanted her to have something to compare a new 2023 CX5 to. They were priced $90 apart on the msrp but Toyota wanted $2k over the sticker. Went to test drive the CX5 premium in red with the parchment interior. What a beautiful car in and out. It made the Rav4 look like and drive a piece of junk. Honestly they are not even in the same league. My personal car is a 2022 Tacoma which I think is a great truck so I'm no Toyota hater. The fit and finish in the CX5 is on par with luxury vehicles. Anyway my 2 cents. She picks it up Saturday.

Doesn't surprise me. In its class, the Mazda CX-5 (in the 'upper' trim levels, at least) is hard to beat, IMO.
Have a 2016.5 CX-5 GT AWD, myself, with about 110Kmi on it now. Runs like a top.
In another handful of years, I'll have to test-drive a couple of the CX-50 to see how it compares. Been seeing more of those around, lately, but also a great number of newer CX-5s and CX-9s. Popular things, at least in my neck o' the woods.

Mazda's software has come a long way since 2017, they have ironed out a lot of bugs and made many improvements, including the slow and unresponsive concern you have. In terms of safety, the FSC (forward sensing camera) and radar systems as well as blind spot monitoring systems can all be updated. Every even service has an MMDS update on the job card, normally dealerships only update the PCM and TCM (powertrain control module and transmission control module) unless there is concern otherwise, but you can request that you want all computer systems updated just to be sure they are all checked. Updates such as the PCM and TCM have the ability to improve efficiency, so there you go .

6 years ago my wife picked a 2017 Rogue SL over the CX-5. A year later I bought a 2018 CX-5 Grand Touring. We live on small mountain with a 1 mile drive up. The Rogue struggles, the pedal has to be mashed almost to the floor to maintain 35 mph, in sport mode. Not enough HP to offset the weight. The CX-5 in Sport mode easily speeds up the mountain.

I purchased a new CX 5’this week. My thirteen year old daughter while in the passenger seat asked if the vehicle cost more than our RAV4 Hybrid XLE and then asked if it cost more than our 21 Tacoma Limited, I told her no on both questions. She seemed surprised. We have owned BMW’s and MB so she is aware of build quality.
I am surprised how well built the CX 5 feels.
