Poor Highway Mileage on CX5 2.5 Engine
I get a solid 27 MPG around town on the Touring, AWD with the 2.5 liter engine. So maybe I was hoping for too much to get 30 plus on the highway. I do not travel at 55, which may be most of the problem, but on prior cars with a bit more aerodynamics (1999 Honda Accord, or 2008 Honda Accord) I easy get the highway estimate of 34 and 31 at 70 MPH.
The CX5 going into a 20 MPH headwind was getting less than 24 MPG (23.8)traveling at 70 plus. Down wind it was only getting 28 MPG. This was verified after the fill up so it's not just the computer calculation here.
Is this typical due to the flat front end or would there be some other explanation?

interesting.. I am getting a 2016 AWD GT and counting on 28-30 mph on the highway at 70-75 mph.
Can anyone tell me what the tach is showing at 75 mph. I drive a lot of highway in the west where speed limits are very high.

thanks..
How many miles do you have on the car? I believe most motors gain some efficiency as they fully break in and have an oil change or two.
I know I am going to get a few miles less with the AWD but I think it is worth if for the better handling and any wet/snow conditions..

Welcome to the world of the CUV. You pay a price for sitting up high. Want better mileage? Shoulda' got a Mazda 3. The engine isn't really broken in until about 5k miles and the first oil change (if you stick with Mazda super-moly oil) you should see an uptick in mileage. Keep in mind you've got the worst combination for fuel mileage (larger engine, 6ATand AWD), but you should be able to top 30 mpg highway with no headwind at 75 mph no problem. I have a 2013 2.0 litre FWD 6AT and the cumulative mpg readout hardly ever drops below 30. And that's mostly city driving. I can get 33-34 all day long on the freeway.

Feeling Lucky with Mileage
Have owned my 2015 CX-5 Touring for exactly one month today. It had 88 miles on it. It now has 1628. I do my own calculating at fill up. Most of my driving is in city/rural. I am consistently getting right at 30 mpg. Today's fill up yielded 30.7 so I am quite pleased.

I've got a '16 Sport 2.5 AWD and the first tank from the dealer I calculated 29.3 and the second at 31.4. The first was whatever because it was the first tank, but the second was my wife's work commute...about 32 miles one-way over a rather large mountain. We were really impressed, but she doesn't go much over 63ish.
I would imagine wind resistance has a lot to do with fuel economy on these given their front surface area.

CX5 Mileage
My 2015 mileage has gotten better since I opened the forum question. I now have 5400 miles on the car and around town it hits 27 plus and on the highway doing 75 I get about 25 to 26. I use the AC about half the time and I am not shy about peddling it to pass. Personally, I am thrilled with the car and feel at 70 plus I cannot expect great mileage so no harm no foul.
