Tailgate opens "mysteriously" and app shows it closed
First mystery: so my wife returned from running errands in her Lexus and today found that the tailgate (AKA liftgate) of my 2021 CX5 was standing open. Notably, she had the key fob for the CX5 in her purse but says she definitely did not remove the key fob or even touch it. The only explanation I can think of is that something may have shifted in her purse and pressed against the key fog. At least that's my hypothesis.
I went out and tested, and I found that opening the tailgate seems to require a solid push of the correct button on the remote for at least two seconds. It seems unlikely that happened in the scenario described above, but I'll admit it's possible..
Second mystery: I checked the Mazda app on my iPhone and both times. With the tailgate open, the app showed "Trunk/Liftgate Closed".
Am I missing something? Shouldn't the app show the tailgate open if, in fact, it is actually open. Could there be a bad sensor?
I welcome any ideas you might have on what happened to cause either or both mysteries!
Many thanks,

Is it possible that you didn't let enough time pass to allow the car to communicate with the app's server? There have been numerous reports on Jeep Garage about liftgates opening on their own. A leading theory is random signals from other sources, plausible with the way everything is moving toward remote communication among various devices, not only cars, but home security systems, TV's, stereos and everything else, but nothing concrete has been discovered yet.

I find my trunk opens occasionally with the fob in my pocket. While it requires extended pressure, it still happens. I suspect the same happened for your wife.
I also agree with the prior post that you may have found it before the app picked up the fact that it was open. Test it by leaving it open and see if you get the notice in a coupe of minutes.

FYI:
This isn't the issue you are having but. you never know.
There is recall for 13,657 2021 Mazda CX-5 for liftgate issue.
The issue is with the liftgate lowering unexpectedly.
It's a motor or programming issue or combo of both.

A:
I too have had this happen. I suspect that the remote button had been some how activated opening the lift gate. It has only occurred once. Of course I was incapable of accepting responsibility for the act and contacted the dealership to see if there had been any reports of "spontaneous lift gate". There were none.
