New Member/Wannabe CX-5 owner
Hi all.
New member here. So I've been trying to make a buying decision between the VW Tiguan and the CX-5. Initially sold on the Tiguan but then saw the CX-5 and loved it. Thinking of getting the 2016 model (don't like that prominent, protruding grill/mesh on the later models). Any advice, please? Performance, reliability, compared to the Tiguan? Anyone here drove the Tiguan before switching to the CX-5?

Went to have a look round the dealers and I discovered that these cars are quite pricey here. So I figured, while I'm at it, why not go for the CX-9? (virtually same price for a bigger car, more space for the large family). That's provided it enjoys or provide similar performance and reliability?

So guys, any advice is appreciated - what to expect, what to avoid, services (oil type/grade) etc. I know a lot would be on the manual, but still..
Lastly, I noticed the wheels are on 17 rim. Can I go bigger? What would be the effect, good or bad?

PROSPECTIVE MEMBER: Hello folks, I am an administrator of Impreza5 a forum for the new Subaru Impreza (5th gen). So, why am I here? I have owned 9 Subarus now from a 2.5RS, Foresters, Legacys and Outbacks, I have owned them all accept for the two door BRZ. Anyway, before I owned all of those Subarus I owned a Protege5 Sport Wagon that I loved but was horrible in the snow, thus why I went to Subaru. The new Impreza is a very nice little car, unfortunately they are low and very uncomfortable and (besides the WRX) pretty slow, and small. My 2017 Impreza Sport only has 37,000 miles on it and I decided to look at some used CX-5 Sports. There are a bunch of low (off lease) Sports in my area prices are in the $18,995 - 20,400 range all with miles under 30k. For that price range and low miles a base Forester would cost thousands more. Also, I love the high quality simplicity of the CX-5, the Subarus have several full color screens and lots of electronic gadgets, to me that means more stuff to break. My car has had 12 recalls! My local Mazda place offered me 15k for my Impreza. My new monthly payment will be a hundred dollars less than the Impreza (6 year loan).
What I am looking for from you guys is any feelings/opinions even if it is to call me stupid at least give me a reason. Chances are very good that even if I am being stupid I will own a 2017 CX-5 next week. Thanks.

You can probably do a little better on the price of an off-lease 2017 Sport. IIRC, the residual (final payoff) on those leases would be 57% of MSRP, meaning the dealer's cost on them should be around $15K or less on an AWD. Or, conversely, in the price range you mentioned you can likely get a higher trim level if you're persistent.
IMO, 2017 is a great year for CX-5's. It's the first year of the new body style which continues through 2021 (and probably 2022). And perhaps best of all, it does not have the cylinder deactivation feature that was added on the 2018's and up for the normally aspirated 2.5L. Call it "controversial" at best, with opinions on CD mostly ranging from mere tolerance to outright dislike.
We have a 2017 CX-5 Touring FWD in the family, and have absolutely loved it. The only thing better is the 2020 CX-5 GTR (turbo AWD) we recently added to our stable too.

Thanks for the reply, bought it yesterday. 2017 Mica Blue Sport with only 14,200 miles on it for $19,995. The car is just mint, looks brand new.
Picking it up today.
K&N air filters really didn't do much to help the Impreza power wise, does it help the CX-5 at all?
