It's considered a "strainer". No need to futz with it unless it's giving you a specific problem. I will defend Mazda and I'll also throw them under the bus if they deserve it.

Had a Mazda Protege with 242,000 miles when I sold it.

It was still getting 40/29 miles per gallon.

It had the original starter, alternator, manual transmission, fuel injectors, and many other parts.

I have a 2005 Acura, has a fuel filter. And a 2003 Jeep, has a fuel filter. Difference between the older cars and "newer", is that older models had a in-line filter that was easily replaced. Now they are mounted or attached to the fuel pump itself, and generally require either pulling the tank or accessing it thru a hatch in the rear compartment or under the rear seat.
Granted, the gas itself may be of high quality now when it comes from the refinery. But from there it is put into a tanker, hauled to a storage facility, put into another tanker and hauled to a gas station where it is put into underground tanks. Then pumped thru a pump, which is SUPPOSED to have a filter, but may not. Each of those steps are an opportunity for contamination either thru dirt or condensation. To assume that there is "no need" for a fuel filter on a vehicle of any kind (hell, there is one on your lawn mower) is just plain silly.

 

Silly or not, fuel filters are a thing of the past; name me one car (i.e. not truck) by any manufacturer sold in the United States or Canada within the last couple of years with a fuel filter.

As I mentioned earlier, regardless of what comes from the refinery, the supply chain is the weak point here. The opportunity for contamination is ripe.

Of course they will. Dealers are the ones that will make more money doing the repairs. Just 2 months ago (or less) several MAPCO stations here in Tennessee were caught, and admitted too, dispensing contaminated gas. Some vehicles had to have tanks drained and filters changed. Some had to have tanks drained and injection systems changed.
